Cemeteries from various epochs are characteristic places of symbolic meaning. They are relics commemorating ancestors and important historical events. In Ełk and its surroundings there are many forgotten and neglected necropolis. The work attempts to restore the historical and cultural values of these areas.Describing individual cemeteries, the author drew attention to their location, surrounding and state of graves and commemorative plaques. This work focuses on presenting the area of the Evangelical cemetery belonging to the urban domain of Ełk. According to the author, this area is currently in a very bad condition and should be subject to urgent renovation and state care.The individual chapters present the genesis and evolution of human burials in various regions of the world and present contemporary forms of burials. The focus was also on showing Protestant beliefs and funeral ceremonies characteristic of the teachings. The operation of light and symbolism in the commemorative architecture in contemporary form is presented. Referring to a specific cemetery, which served as the place of the designed columbar, a story was recalled related to the former grange, the Teutonic Castle and the lake, which are close to the surroundings of this area. Taking into account the elements, historical catacombs, religious symbolism and spiritual places in sacral objects, the author said that the best way to give the cemetery the status of worship and memory of man is to create a place commemorating the people buried here.The work proposed the creation of an underground place of worship, commemorating the dead. Mystical zones and corridors leading to specific graves were specified. Paths, led through the temple of water, the lobby of voices and shadows, corridors reminiscent of the existing graves resemble a maze in which the passage ends with a symbolic staircase. The most important place for prayer and contemplation is the chapel, where visitors can express their respect by leaving a stone under the altar.The project activities are aimed at restoring the tradition of cemetery architecture, history and cultural values of the place and its symbolism. The purpose of the work is to create a sacred area that will protect existing human remains and expose the remains of the graves. The whole in an integral way should show the essence of the human life path from birth to death and resurrection.
